Knowing What You Want Amidst the Mass Marketing of the Season

December is probably the most marketing-heavy month of the year with a special focus on this upcoming week (Boxing Day!). I don’t deny that there are some great deals to be found out there but amidst the mass marketing of the season, be sure to keep focused on what’s important – quality products for a great price. To help guide you, here are a few things you should look for when shopping for a mattress:

1) Coils – Two things to consider here are: coil count and coil system. Typically, the higher the coil count, the more support the mattress provides. It is particularly important to think about the weight of the person/people sleeping on the mattress when considering coil count.

You may also want to look at coil system. Sleepwell Bedding offers two types:

a. Continuous Coil System – Coils here are interwoven to provide support and durability

b. Pocket Coil System – Pocket coils are individually wrapped to reduce the feeling of movement

2) Density of Foam – definitely ask about the density of foam used in the mattress. Mattress foam is most commonly 1, 1.5 or 2 pounds of foam compressed into each square foot. A higher poundage creates a denser foam which makes the mattress last longer.

3) Warranty – Be sure to ask what exactly the warranty covers so you’re not surprised if you ever need to use it. You also want to consider the process by which you claim your warranty. Will the store send you to the manufacturer who will direct you to a customer service line? How long will the process take to speak to the right person? How long will the process take to get the mattress fixed? The warranty is also a great gauge to tell you what kind of quality you’re getting. The longer the warranty, the more faith the manufacturer has in its ability to last.

Also, when hunting for deals this season, be weary of things that may seem too good to be true. Huge markdowns is a big one. If businesses can afford to offer 60% off (or more!) on the regular price and still make money, the ‘regular price’ may be heavily inflated meaning you’re not saving as much as you think. And remember that naturally, higher quality products are more expensive to produce. Mattresses can be made to look fluffy using cheap materials such as polyester so if you’re getting a luxurious looking set for a dirt cheap price make sure you are asking the hard hitting questions to ensure it is still a quality product that will last.

Hope this helps!
